Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Code 128, UPC-A, and EAN-13 barcodes?
**UPC-A (12 digits)** is the standard retail point-of-sale barcode in the United States and Canada. **EAN-13 (13 digits)** is the international retail standard used worldwide. **Code 128** is a high-density alphanumeric barcode capable of encoding any ASCII character (letters, numbers, symbols), standard in logistics, shipping (UPS/FedEx), and inventory tracking.
How is the check digit calculated in UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes?
The final digit is a Modulo-10 checksum: 1) Sum all odd-positioned digits and multiply by 3; 2) Sum all even-positioned digits; 3) Add both sums together; 4) The check digit is the number needed to round the total up to the nearest multiple of 10. Our generator calculates and validates this check digit automatically.
What is the 'Quiet Zone' on a barcode and why is it mandatory?
The Quiet Zone is the clear, unprinted white margin on the left and right sides of a barcode (typically at least 10 times the width of the narrowest bar or 0.25 inches). Optical laser scanners require this blank space to establish calibration before reading barcode data.
Can I print generated barcodes on thermal label printers?
Yes. By exporting as vector SVG or high-resolution PNG (300+ DPI), the barcodes print with razor-sharp black-and-white edge contrast, preventing ink bleed on thermal label printers.
